What is ethylene propylene rubber?

Ethylene-propylene rubber is obtained by the directional copolymerization of ethylene and propylene as the main monomers. It includes two types of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPM) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).

EPM is made by copolymerizing ethylene and 20%~30% propylene. There is no double bond in the molecular chain and it is full of rubber. It cannot be vulcanized with sulfur, but can only be cross-linked with peroxide. Slow vulcanization and expensive vulcanizing agent limit its use.

EPDM is the third monomer introduced into the copolymer of ethylene and propylene. Such as: vinylidene norbornene, dicyclopentadiene, etc. In this way, sulfur can be vulcanized, and the properties are similar to EPM. There is no polar substitution group in the molecule, it is non-crystalline, and the relative density is 0.86~0.88.

High temperature tape increases the advantages of ethylene propylene rubber:

1. Excellent aging resistance. Ozone resistance is outstanding, far better than butyl rubber and CR. Good weather resistance, no cracks will be seen after exposure to the sun for 3 years. NR 150 days to crack, SBR 5 days to crack, 70 days to crack, better aging resistance. Long-term use at 150°C, the aging resistance is the best among general-purpose rubbers.

2. Chemical resistance. It has great resistance to various polar chemicals, acids and alkalis. The resistance to hydrocarbon oils is poor.

3. Excellent electrical insulation. Exceeding butyl rubber, suitable for high pressure of 45~65KW.

4. Good impact and cold resistance. The resilience rate can reach 50%~60%, second only to NR and BR. It has a better elastic retention function at low temperature, hardening at -57℃, and brittle at -77℃.

The disadvantage of adding ethylene-propylene rubber to high-temperature tape is its slow vulcanization speed, which is 3 to 4 times slower than ordinary rubber. It is difficult to use with other under-saturated rubbers, poor self-adhesiveness and mutual adhesion, difficult adhesion, and poor processing functions. .
